Winner of Black & White Photographer of the Year 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Soula Zavacopoulos, designer and founder of The London Studio, has won the 2009 Black & White Photographer of the Year award, hosted by Practical Photography in association
with Jessops.

Soula plans to use her prize – over £1000 worth of photography and printing equipment – to expand The London Studio’s photographic greeting card ranges. Currently they publish two photographic collections by Soula and have plans to launch a new photographic range later this year.

The current ranges are “True London” - an artistic, black and white collection of the great city from central landmarks to urban retreats; and “The Botanic Collection” - a striking collection of plant portraits that reveal the intricate form and abstract essence of nature.

The annual Photographer of the Year competition is open to photographers from across the globe and this year hails its 50th anniversary. Says Soula, "I am so thrilled to have won and am looking forward to receiving the prize as I'm keen to try out my new equipment and get snapping!

About the Winning Image
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Next Step" was taken from a concrete bridge, looking down at fast-moving water. The water was covered by a swirling, ever-changing layer of froth. Soula blocked out everything else and focused in close on just 3 things in order to set the stage for "telling a story" and to give the photograph a feeling of contemplation and uncertainty.

Soula explains, "I wanted to produce a slightly ambiguous and abstract image, so the viewer could interpret it subjectively. For me, I like the juxtaposition between an uneasiness felt due to the person standing a little too close to the edge, their shoes slightly jutting over, and a calmer, more contemplative feeling from the beautiful shapes of the froth, providing movement
and mesmerism."
